1. Wild Blueberries

Low bush variety. High in Vitamin C, manganese and phytonutrients. Fruits and berries were some of the foods that sustained early hunter-gatherer peoples, a part of our evolutionary diet. However, today’s cultivated, hybridized, transported, high sugar fruits are a far cry from wild cultivars. Supermarket fruits have been bred by people over hundreds of years to be sweet, sweeter and sweetest. We traded nutrients for sweetness. We also frequently remove the peel, pith and rinds where many of the nutrients are concentrated. Wild blueberries have escaped this fate and remain tiny and flavorful and nutrient-packed. These are my choice for those of us here in the United States. Many food and nutrition sources have been singing the praises of the Goji berry and the Acai berry. These are indeed powerful berries, but they come from across the world. Wild blueberries also have the ability to be frozen and remain wonderfully tasty and appealing. Toddlers and kids often LOVE a little dish of frozen blueberries right out of the freezer for a snack or toss them into the blender for delicious, purple smoothies.
A delicious winter-time breakfast can be made from heating frozen blueberries in a saucepan with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg, a spoonful or two of maple syrup or raw honey, a spoonful of coconut oil and a sprinkling of chopped walnuts or pecans. On the technical side, blueberries contain huge amounts of phytonutrients called anthocyanins which are antioxidants, antiaging and anticancer nutrients. The anthocyanin content of wild blueberries is higher than other berries and fruits and is actually 38% higher than red wine which we hear about so often.
Blueberries are also protective against Urinary Tract Infections. Like cranberries they prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder-and they taste a lot better than cranberries!
